Patient cleared to return to flight aviary. Will need imping prior to release, has broken multiple flight and tail feathers while indoors.

Examined surgical site on ventrum this morning, appears to be healing well though skin along proximal side of incision is somewhat thin/erythematous. There is no heat/swelling/discharge or significant discomfort. The right carpus has a small wound which has mild seepage of clear serous fluid but no erythema/foul smell/swelling. A carpal pad of telfa and tegaderm was placed over this carpus.
Patient is damaging feathers while in the enclosure, imping likely needed prior to release.

Surgery report
Procedure - Wound debridement
Performed by - AMS
Surgery time - 6 minutes

Anesthestized with Iso/O2 via mask, intubated, maintained on
3% Iso. No complications. L inguinal wound area was plucked
(had very minimal feather regrowth from previous surgery) and
prepped with betadine. Previous sutures were removed. A triangular
area at the center of the previous closure had dehisced and remains
unhealed. Placed several simple interrupted sutures to close
this gap with 4-0 PDS. Applied mupirocin topically and covered
with sure-site bandage. The right carpus has a small lesion.
Cleaned with betadine, then applied skin glue to reappose the
skin. Placed carpal bumbers bilaterally.

Tegaderm still in place on inguinal wound. No major changes to either wound from last observation; both were dry. Old tegaderm was removed and a minor amount of yellow crusting exudate was present on the lateral side of the sutures. A wedge-shaped section of pink scar tissue is present on the medial side of the sutures. The inguinal wound was gently scrubbed with dilute betadine, SSD cream applied with sterile CTA, and new tegaderm was placed. The leg wound continues to heal with granulation tissue present.

Observational examination - lice
Avian insect liquidator was applied after surgery.

After recovery from surgery, a broken-off right primary feather was noted in the bottom of the enclosure.

Surgery report
Procedure - Wound debridement
Performed by - Dr. Duvall
Surgery time - 10 minutes

A ~2cm linear incision was made near the left inguinal area.
Fibrosis between the subcutis and dermis was noted. The scar
tissue was debrided, and a small pocketing wound was explored.
There was no obvious foreign material or evidence of infection.
Sterile saline was used to flush the wound. The edges were debrided,
and 4-0 PDS was used in a Ford interlocking pattern to close
the subcutis and dermis. SSD cream and tegaderm were applied
over the surgical site.

The eschar on the left medial tibiotarsus was also removed. A
bed of granulation tissue had started to form, and the wound
was gently scrubbed with dilute betadine. The wound was left
to heal via second intention, and tegaderm was applied over it.

------------- PHYSICAL EXAM FINDINGS ----------------
Attending Veterinarian: Dr. Abigail Duvall
Observational examination
Mentation: BAR
Posture: Standing
Vital stats
Heart rate: 320
Respiratory rate: 24
Auscultation: WNL
Mucous membranes: Pink
Hydration: <5%
Eyes: No observable abnormalities; Fluorescein stain negative OU
Integument: Scabbing in left inguinal area - healed wound. Scabbing with healing injury on left caudomedial tibiotarsus (fresh granulation tissue still adhered to eschar) approx. 4 cmx 2 cm. Puncture wound with pocket extending ~2cm deep, full thickness in body wall just distal and left of the keel.
Wings - Range of motion: Mildly sensitive to palpation and extension of right shoulder
BCS: 4
Other observations: Rest of physical exam WNL.

Problem list: - Soft tissue injuries to body wall and left tibiotarsus.
Diagnosis: - Traumatic wound
Assessment: - Head trauma and previously noted ocular problems have resolved.
- Healing wounds to left caudal body may be due to an injury in the flight aviary. Due to depth and extent of injuries, this was less likely caused by another owl.
Plan: Tx:
Gently scrubbed scabs with dilute betadine and used sterile CTA with betadine solution to explore wound.
Meloxicam 1.0 mg/kg IM given once
TMS 48 mg/kg PO BID

Plan for surgical exploration of body wall wound tomorrow.
